The Nikon D7000 has two little brothers, the Nikon D3100 and the Nikon D5100. Of these three, the D7000 is top of the line. You have to pay for these superior features mind you, but if you have the money, and want the “tops”, the D7000 is here for you. Let’s break down some of the features in this “Non Fluff” review…
The Nikon D7000 Specifications

) Autofocus Capability – The D3100 and D5100 have 11 autofocus points. This is sufficient for most users, but if you want to really focus, I mean really focus, on things like bird photography, the Nikon D7000 is the camera for you. It has 39 (that’s right 39) autofocus points. The D7000 also has a built-in motor, so there is no need to purchase lenses with built in autofocus motors.
) Continuous Shooting Speed – As you work up from the D3100 to the D5100 to the “ta da” D7000, you will be increasing the camera’s capabilities of not only shooting speed, but the maximum number of shots. Do you often capture action shots like birds flying? If so, you really need the higher frame rate and the Nikon D7000 is at your service. Combined with its superior autofocus capabilities this feature will help you to sharply capture those moving objects (in all types of conditions I might add). With the custom settings of the D7000 you can also modify the low speed continuous mode to shoot from 1 to 5 frames per second as well.
) Ease of Operation – While the menus, controls and buttons of the D3100 and D5100 are very good, the D7000 “kicks it up an additional notch”. The additional controls of the D7000 are quite thoughtfully designed. Once the advanced user spends a little time with them they will become very intuitive and straightforward. This means that you can focus on your photography more…not on all those buttons and such.
) Exposure Metering – The D7000 has an advanced metering system…more advanced that its brothers the D3100 and D5100. If your shooting demands not only extremely precise metering but tight control over the size of the metered area, the D7000 (with its 2016 pixel RGB metering system) is the camera for you.
) Full HD video – With the D7000 you can shoot 1080p at 24 frames per second and 720p at 24, 25, or 30 frames per second (for up to 20 minutes with full-time autofocus).
) Hands on Experience – If you like the ergonomic feel of a more solid and larger camera body you will want to pick the D7000 over the baby brothers D3100 and D5100.
) Pricing – When purchasing a camera this is the clincher for most people. We would all love to have the D7000 wouldn’t we? Having said that, do you really need all the features that this powerhouse provides? If not, you may be just has happy with the D3100 or D5100.
) Viewfinder – Both the D3100 and D5100 have viewfinders that provide approximately 95% coverage of the resulting image. This is quite satisfactory for most photographers, but if you really want a “what you see is what you get” you should definitely consider the Nikon D7000 with its large and bright pentaprism viewfinder with a full 100% coverage. When you compare the two viewfinders side-by-side you will definitely see the difference.
) Wireless Flash – One thing that the D7000 offers that its brothers the D3100 and D5100 do not offer is advanced wireless lighting. You can use the built-in flash as the controller of off-camera Nikon Speedlights. How cool is that? Way Cool!!! Basically you can set up one or more Speedlights in “remote mode”, and then fire them off wirelessly with the build-in flash of the D7000.
